Latest from the Janitors, Asps, and Other Books - Tears And Terrorists (Asps Series) - Drew and Boris pick up two tails in Pakistan.

Today’s excerpt is from Tears And Terrorists, Book #4 of the Asps Series.  While trying to develop their cover story in Pakistan, Drew and Boris pick a tail, or rather two tails.  Enjoy and have a wonderful day.

Early the next morning, Drew and Boris received a call from a rather small charter airline service at the small plane airport.  The owner was interested in expanding, and wondered if the two potential investors would stop by his facility when they had time.  They immediately agreed, knowing an investment at the airport would allow them to keep a close eye on the planes of the company supplying Jordan with his means of transportation.  As he drove, with Boris sitting next to him, Drew glanced over at him.  “I see we still have our shadow.”

“I noticed.  Turn at the next corner.  I think our tail may have a tail of his own—or we have two.”

Drew, having suspected the same thing, made a right turn at the next corner.  Both vehicles behind them turned, also.  At the next corner, he turned left.  Again, both vehicles made the turn.  Drew asked, “Shall we put them afoot?”

“By all means.”

Drew drove on until he found a likely place to stop.  When he pulled in and turned off the Land Rover’s engine, he got out without a word, as Boris did the same.  They walked forward for half a block, then casually went into a crowded shop.  Right on through it they went, and out the back.  The two men quickly headed back the way they had come, on the street where their Land Rover was parked.  At an alley, they turned right and soon came back to their original street.  The tail on the tail were two nicely dressed men, who were now less than ten feet in front of Drew and Boris.  Both men soon had an Asp in their respective backs.  Drew growled, in Arabic, “Please be kind enough to turn around and head back to the alley you just passed.”

The men did as told and, when herded into the alley by Drew and Boris, one smiled.  “Gentlemen, we’re Tony Henry’s men—sent to cover your back.  I assume if you spotted us, you spotted the other two chaps.”

Drew said nothing as he reached into the man's jacket pocket, found his identification, which indeed showed him to be an SIS agent.  Drew handed it back to him.  “You could be of greater service to us if you would keep an eye on our wives and Boris’ son.  They’ll be leaving our hotel within the half hour.  I think we can handle the two guys who were behind us and in front of you.”

One of the SIS agents chuckled.  “I’d say you probably can.  We’ll keep a watch on your loved ones.”

Boris suggested, “If they are not being followed, please be kind enough to introduce yourselves.  Both ladies are well versed in tradecraft.  I’d hate to see anything happen to either of you.”

Before anything else could be said, Drew and Boris turned and went back down the alley, then back to the shop they had come through.  It took them only a few seconds to see the two men they sought, loitering in front of the shop.  They walked to the doorway and, on a hunch he’d discussed with Drew before they left the hotel, Boris muttered, in Russian, “Let’s duck out the back way.”

He said it loud enough to be heard by the nearest of the two men.  They then turned and headed back to the rear of the building, and went out.  Boris turned right, Drew to the left as they left the building.  When the two men reached the rear doorway, both men had their Asps pulled and motioned the two men to move in Drew’s direction.  Boris came up behind them, reached around one of them, and took out the gun located in his shoulder holster.  Drew took the gun of the other man.  On hearing just a slight noise behind him, Boris grumbled, without turning around, “Hello, Sergey.”

Sergey Terekhov, a former KGB agent trained by Boris, and long time friend of his mentor, joked, “You win, Boris.  Nice to see you,” as he extended his hand to Boris, who had now turned around.

After those two shook hands, Drew shook Sergey’s hand as well, then asked, “These two belong to you, Sergey?”

“Yes.”

Both Boris and Drew returned the weapons to the two men.  Drew reached into his pocket and took out a money clip.  He extracted a hundred dollar bill from it and handed it to Boris, “You cost me a hundred bucks.  After we spotted these two yesterday, Boris bet me a hundred bucks you were behind the tailing job.  Was it to protect our backs, or a training operation for those two?”

“Training.”

Drew snatched the hundred dollar bill back from Boris’ hand. “In that case, it’s a wash.  I predicted, if he was right in his feeling they belonged to you, it would be training.  He went with protecting our back.”

Sergey laughed again, “No need to protect your backs.  If you two can’t spot a tail by now, you’re too old to be doing whatever it is you’re doing.”

While that conversation was taking place, Dusty and Sarah had walked to the SUV Harry and Ike were in.  Just as they did, Sarah went, stood in front of the building the SUV was parked in front of, and posed.  Dusty took out his cell phone and acted as though he was snapping a picture of her.  He backed up a bit, to stand near the open window of the SUV, and Ike deftly handed him a car-tracking device. As Sarah walked off hand-in-hand with him, Dusty passed it to Sarah and told her what to do.  They continued on down the sidewalk, until they neared the sedan.  There Sarah knelt down and tied her shoe…after slipping the tracking device under the rear bumper of the sedan.  When she stood up, she giggled, walked over to the building the sedan was parked in front of, and did some more posing.  Dusty walked on past where she stood and again pretended to snap a few pictures of her.  As he put away the phone, he did snap a few pictures…of the two men in the car.  He did it so slickly neither man had any idea of what had just happened, right in front of them.  They did give admiring glances to Sarah as she and Dusty continued on down the sidewalk.

He said in Arabic and using a false gruff voice, “Enough of your nonsense.  You will talk to me, or wish you had.”  Tony grabbed Baroom’s free arm and broke it between the wrist and elbow.  Next, he pulled his leg over the edge of the metal cot, and broke it between the knee and ankle.

·

While that was going on, Harry pulled the two guards in the lobby over behind the desk.  Just as he finished, another compound guard turned a corner from a different direction than Tony, Kye, and Bear had gone.  The guard reacted way too slowly, as Bruce shot the gun he carried with his Asp.  The guard was stunned, as the weapon in Harry’s hand made virtually no sound, and stood there open-mouthed as Harry rushed forward and zapped him with his stun gun.  Harry soon had the man gagged and bound, like the other two, inside the main entrance.  Harry then dragged him to the other two, and plopped him down on top of them.

·

After Tony rearranged the arm and leg of Baroom, Kye and Bear went into the room, and Bear fired a muffled shot into a jacket taken from a guard, using the guard’s gun.  He said in Arabic, “Drag that piece of garbage out of here.”  Kye grunted and smiled, as Tony quickly walked out of the room.  After Bear freed Baroom from the restraints, Kye pulled the hood off his head and took the tape off his mouth.

Bear said in Arabic, “I’ll carry you to our cars.  Put your good arm over my shoulder and grab onto the strap of my shoulder holster.”  Baroom did as told, and Bear carried Baroom out of the building.

Seeing them coming, Bruce said into his communication set, “Ike, Jack…cars…now.”

The cars were waiting for Bear by the time he reached the gate, and he put Baroom in the car driven by Ike.  Bear and Kye got in, while the others piled into the second car.  Once in the car, Kye and Bear took off their hoods, and Bear said, in Arabic, “You’re safe now.  We have a plane ready.  We will be in the air in minutes.”

Baroom, who was suffering a great deal of pain from the torture he’d endured in the past twenty-four hours—not to mention the two newly broken bones—just nodded his thanks.

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, and Other Books - Birth Of The Asps (Asps Series) - Dusty and Kye have a problem.

Today’s excerpt is from Birth Of The Asps, Book #1 of the Asps Series.  While looking for al-Qaida camp, Dusty and Kye run into some trouble.  Enjoy and have a fantastic day.

m.j.

Kye just nodded as she pulled off her shirt and started taking off her shorts.  Dusty did the same, and soon they were putting on their camouflage gear—tights and form-fitting shirt for both.  They had those items rather than standard issue jungle fatigues because they took up far less room in the luggage bags.  Dusty took out a shoulder holster with an Asp and started to put it on.  He stopped, looked at it, grinned, and handed it to Kye, who nearly busted out laughing at the thought of Dusty trying to put on her much smaller shoulder holster straps.  He then put his own on, got out their small communication sets, and handed one to Kye.  Next he looked around and found a place to conceal their picnic basket, the blanket, and their discarded “tourist clothing.”

Then they started up the incline, with Dusty carrying both equipment bags.  Just as he reached the top, Kye—who had been right behind him—lost her footing and fell down the incline head-over-heels.  Dusty heard the commotion and turned to look down the incline to Kye, now sitting up at the bottom.  He hurried down and knelt beside her.

“Are you okay?”

“No.  I hurt all over.  Let’s go.”

Dusty smiled, helped Kye to her feet, then followed her up the incline, giving her a gentle boost from behind.  Kye was sore, humiliated, and mad at herself, but thankful for Dusty just calmly helping her out, without sarcastic comments—which she was sure would follow at some point.

When she reached the top of the incline, she saw nothing of any camp and quietly asked, “Where’s this camp?”

Dusty pointed through some of the thick foliage.  Then Kye could see just a glimpse of what she had been looking for.  Without comment, Dusty started down the not very well worn path and Kye followed.  The further they went, the more Kye could see of the camp.  For the most part, it was in a clearing in the rain forest.

As they neared the camp, Dusty veered off the path into some thick vegetation and Kye followed.  Dusty pointed to a small place of concealment and whispered, “You climb in that hidey hole, while I go find a place to set up our gear.”

“Okay.  Hey, got a question—why are they right out in the open like this?”

“Because they’re al-Qaida…idiots.  They must feel sure no one will just come along this way, and none of our satellites will be wasting time to snapping pictures of Dominica.  They’re probably right on both counts, but they’re still idiots for not being concealed in the lush vegetation, where no one could see them with ease.  It would never occur to them someone might actually come along here, looking for them…or not.  See you in a while.  You see anybody coming along our trail from either direction, try to give me a head’s up.”

Kye said nothing in return, as Dusty eased off and was gone from sight in less than a minute.  The spot Dusty had picked out for her was far from comfortable—especially with her aches and pains from the fall—but she suffered on in silence.

Dusty worked his way down to a spot of concealment and set up the listening device contained in the two bags.  It was an elaborate set-up that not only listened, but also recorded.  Dusty could listen by plugging in an earphone apparatus.  The device only recorded when something was being said.  By careful aiming and tuning, Dusty was able to get the receiver pointed at a tent he determined was the headquarters tent, after listening in on various conversations from various points.

After two hours of listening, and being amazed at what he was hearing, Dusty popped out the tape of what he’d heard and put in a new one.  Then he started working his way back to Kye.  To avoid making noise or giving away his presence in any manner, the going was slow, but he carefully worked his way back toward her.

Meanwhile, Kye had also been busy.  She’d brought along a pad and pen in the pocket of her leotards and had been busy sketching out a map of the camp’s layout, which was fully visible to her from the vantage point where Dusty had left her.

She was so intent on what she was doing that she didn’t see or hear the machete-armed man who was walking down the path from the original direction she and Dusty had approached the camp.

He, on the other hand, was observant enough to accidentally spot Kye.  He quietly left the trail and approached her from behind.  Just as he raised his machete, Kye somehow sensed his presence and turned, reaching for her Asp as she did so.  She realized she’d never be fast enough, and resigned herself to joining her husband in death.

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, and Other Books - Sedona Chip (Janitors Series) - Fake project gets name.

Today’s excerpt is from Sedona Chip, Book #9 of the Janitors Series.  Plans for building to house fake computer get a name, which leads to a bit of humor.  Enjoy and have a wonderful day.

Janet shook her head.  “Remember, we just need to get the thing started.  Don’t want to put the finishing touches on it until we know the spy is here.  And for him to be here, we have to lure him in.  So really, your contractor just has to get started, then leave a small crew here, to slow-walk the construction until the spy arrives.”

John nodded and asked, “How will we know when he’s here?”

Boris smiled.  “We’ll know.”

For the next hour, they all discussed the fine points of the plan.  The basic building would be round, with a balcony all the way around.  After the “computer” assembly was placed in the middle of the building by helicopter, a lightweight prefabricated roof would be placed behind the balcony.  At some point, a large antenna would be erected near the building.  It, of course, would serve absolutely no purpose, just be for show.

The military guard unit to be brought in would have tents for their housing and eating facilities.  Drew mentioned the tents would have a very nice interior, not visible outside the tents.  The extra niceties on the interior of the tents would be paid for by the Janitors.  The workers would come and go by helicopter.  So, too, for the most part, would others coming to the facility.  However, Drew, Boris, and John would make occasional trips to the location by jeep.

At one point, Arnold joked, “A computer chip like this one should have a name.”

Drew tilted his head.  “So name it.”

“How about ‘Sedona Chip,’ since it will be housed here.  That will also give the French a place to start looking, once the President and General Bradley discuss it.”

Boris reached over and patted Arnold on the shoulder.  “Oh, very good, Arn.  We’ll make a spy out of you yet.”

Nancy grumbled, “Hush, Boris.  You’ll give him a fat head.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, and Other Books - Devil's Brew (Janitors Series) - Syria raid being planned.

Today’s excerpt is from Devil’s Brew, Book #8 of the Janitors Series.  The expanded team works on plan for raid into Syria.  Enjoy and have a great day.

That taken care of, the action planning began in earnest.  They settled on having ten snipers at the big camp, and using five snipers at each of the other, smaller camps.  They wanted the snipers in place before any action took place.  Then the main force would hit the first camp.  The job of the snipers at the other camps was to keep them pinned down as well as possible if they received word that the biggest camp was under attack.  Then the force would move on down the line.  Fortunately the largest camp was at one end of the line of camps.

Then Jim sat back, shook his head, and rubbed his forehead.  “Naw.  These camps are close enough that we better hit them all at once—just have to divide our troops according to camp size.”

Terry Ward nodded.  “I was about to suggest the same thing, Jim.  We alert the other four camps while hitting the first one and we’d have the ‘devil’s own time’ keeping them contained.”

Jim grinned.  “You could have spoken up sooner and saved all the wasted time.”

“Just wanted to see how smart my leader is.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, and Other Books - Dead Silent Calm (Janitors Series) - Drew gets name of hit man who killed Billy's wife.

Today’s excerpt is from Dead Silent Calm, Book #7 of the Janitors Series.  Drew discovers the name of the man who killed Billy’s wife from mob boss.  Enjoy and have a fantastic day.

In New York, Don Angelo “Meat Hook” Calabrese sent one of his bodyguards to fetch Drew.  When he arrived at the table, Drew sat down at the unspoken invitation of Angelo.

Angelo looked at him.  “I give you this guy’s name, what happens to him?”

“He dies…after I ask him a few questions.  Most importantly, who sent him.”

“At least you’re being honest with me…didn’t try to give me a line of shit.  Is this a CIA matter?”

“No.”

“His name’s Peter Cusimano.”

Angelo then slid a piece of paper across the table to Drew.  “Those are addresses where you might find him.  I trust there is no need to involve his family, or his associates in this.”

“None.  Unless they are involved in the hit in some way.  Anyone who was is dead.  He’ll tell who was involved.”

A shiver ran down the spine of Don Angelo, glad that he wasn’t involved.  Few men he’d ever met frightened him.  Andrew F. Hollins was one of those men.  He let out his breath slowly.  “I want you to know that I respect you for not bringing up Sicily when you asked for this favor.  However, trust me that this wipes the slate clean as far as I’m concerned.”

Drew shook his head.  “There never was any slate to wipe clean.  You killed your man in Sicily, I killed mine.  Neither of us caused a problem for the other.  No slate.  I do thank you for this information, however.  I’m in your debt—within reason.”

Don Angelo smiled.  “I’ll keep that in mind if I get busted by those fellows outside.”

“If you do, I’ll see you get a nice comfy cell…extra thick mattress or something.”

“That I can arrange on my own.  You said this wasn’t CIA business.  What is it?”

“Family business.”

Angelo raised an eyebrow.  “I seem to remember using that term once in your presence.  Relative?”

“Wife of a man I love and respect.  Works with me.”

Drew stood up.  “Again, thank you.”

“You’re welcome.  I’ll make a call.  He won’t be protected or warned, and there will be no retaliation attempts made in your direction.  I’d hate to see the entire Detroit operation wiped out.”

Drew smiled.  “Thank you again.  Maybe I’ll arrange for a coffee pot in your cell.”

“Stop with the ‘cell’ already.  Or are you trying to give me a not so subtle hint that I’m about to be in big trouble?”

“No, but this new guy at FBI is one tough cookie.  He’s on you like stink on shit.  You might consider getting out.  Retire.  I’d suggest Sicily.”

“I think not—at least as far as Sicily is concerned, but thank you for your advice.”
