Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - Ancient Rookie (Other Books) - Chet says the wrong thing...but recovers.

Today’s excerpt is from Ancient Rookie, a standalone sports fantasy book with an action/adventure sub-story.  Chet goofs before starting a sexual relationship with Megan, but finally gets his message across.  Enjoy and have a fantastic day.

m.j.

Soon both were in his large shower stall as he began helping her wash.  When she started rinsing the soap off, Chet got out to start drying himself off.  When Megan came out, she grabbed a towel and started drying herself off, too.  When she finished, Chet took her by the hand, leading her toward the bed.  “One thing I should tell you before we do this, Megan.  In addition to the house, I’ve already set up a trust account for a million dollars for you.”

Megan stopped dead in her tracks, pulling her hand from Chet’s.  “What!  You think…you think—aw, hell.”  She turned, grabbed her robe, and left for her own room, tears running down her face.

Chet put his hand to his face, ran it down, then dropped it while he muttered, “Nice move, asshole.”

He got his towel, tied it around his waist, and headed for Megan’s room.  When he got there he looked kindly at her.  “Megan, I’m so sorry.  That was so stupid.  It’s just…well, I wasn’t sure.  I couldn’t understand why such a hot young lady like you could want to sleep with an old idiotic fart like me.  I just…I’m sorry.”

As he had been talking, he had been moving his arms.  The movement caused the towel to slip from his waist.  Megan saw, and saw Chet standing there, realizing it, also.  She noticed his mouth open and shut, then open and shut again.  She suddenly could also understand why he might lack the confidence to think she could want him just for him, not for his money.  She took a deep breath as he continued to stand there, naked in front of her, “Is that supposed to be some sort of seductive move?”

Again his mouth opened and shut…twice.  Then Megan dropped her robe and went to him.

Today’s excerpt is from How ‘bout Both, the third book in the Bader Trilogy.  Elmer tries to make a deal with a doctor on when he’ll leave the hospital after being involved in the terrorist bombing.  Then has the problem of who will drive for him and Maine solved.  Enjoy and have a wonderful day.

m.j.

The doctor nodded, “You’re not going anywhere, Lieutenant.  You’re here for observation for at least three days.  You took a good knock on your noggin.  I know that doesn’t sound doctor-like, but you get the message.  You almost surely have a concussion.  You are not leaving here until I’m sure you’re out of the woods.”

Elmer grumbled, “Never been in the woods in my life.  I’ll make you a deal, doc.  I’ll wait until morning, then I’m gone—with or without your blessing.”

Ruth shook her head.  “That’s my husband, the idiot, speaking.”

Just as the doctor started to say something, Helen’s cell phone rang.  She saw it was her station calling.  She answered, “Make it quick…I’m in Lieutenant Bader’s room at the hospital.  The doctor is trying to run us all out of here, as it is.”

Helen listened for a few moments, then nodded, “Get the information to Captain Wilcox at LAPD Homicide…pronto.”

She listened a bit more.  “Know just who to get for the job.  I’ll handle it—the station paying?”

She listened a bit more, and smiled, “Good.  Get it to Captain Wilcox.”

Off the call, she looked around the room.  “Someone—probably the killer, from the message he left—called.  Told the operator at my station to tell me he had only begun.  Also said my ‘boyfriend’ was on his short list of cops he was going to kill.  Mentioned he might just kill me, too…after my comments on the air earlier.  I’m assuming he meant you, Elmer.  In case you missed it—being knocked out and all—I had a few pointed words for this jackass, and also said nice things about you.”

Elmer looked hard at the doctor.  “Ten in the morning, I’m outta here.  Or do you want to risk this guy blowing up your hospital to get me?”

The doctor, now white as a sheet, nodded, “We’ll see how you are.”

Then he turned and left the room, passing FBI Special Agent Homer Spradling on the way in.  He exchanged greetings with everyone there.  The doctor just sighed, as he didn’t even bother making any more comments about the number of people in Elmer’s room.  After Homer finished saying hello to everyone, he looked at Elmer.  “Was in San Francisco when all this went down, pal.  Got back as fast as I could.  Just wanted to stop by to pay my respects to our wounded hero, before telling you we’re at your disposal on this deal.  Anything I can do?”

Elmer nodded.  “Yeah—check in with Alan and Reggie.  See where they’re at.  They might could use your computer to check a few things.  Our computer is good, but yours is better—sorry, Chief.  The City gives you more money—I’m sure ours would be updated to match theirs.  One thing you could do, Homer, is check out the possibility of this guy using the ‘I’m gonna kill cops’ stuff for cover, in case he’s actually a terrorist…or part of a terrorist cell.  Oh, wait—you weren’t here when we just got word he called Helen’s station.  Said he wasn’t done killing cops.  Mentioned I was on his short list—as was Helen…or something of the sort.  Anyhow, we should try to find out if we’re dealing with a guy with a hard-on for cops, or with a terrorist.”

Ruth asked, “How ‘bout both?  Guy could be all pissed at the police, but also be a terrorist—maybe the home-grown variety.”

Elmer looked at Ruth.  “That’s my honey…always a step ahead.  Good thought, Ruthie.  Thanks.  I’m sure Reggie and the guys are checking out recently released ex-cons with a grudge against LAPD.  Homer, how about checking out any who might have picked up the Muslim religion while in the joint…or were already Muslim’s when they went in.  Coordinate it with Reggie and Alan, until I get back in the shop tomorrow…about noon.”

Homer raised an eyebrow, “You gonna be okay to go so soon?”

Ruth grunted, “No, but you can bet if he can get out of that bed, he’ll be there.”

The Chief touched Gordon’s sleeve.  “Let’s get out of here to let the real cops do their work.  Damn guy’s flat in bed, solving the stinking case.  Should’ve made him Chief of Detectives.”

Gordon laughed.  “Yeah—you’re on to something, Chief.  Let’s go.”

After those two left, Elmer looked at Maine.  “Well, with me in the shape I’m in—you with a busted arm—we’ll have to find a driver.”

Ruth volunteered, “I’ll do it.”

 “No thanks, dear.”

Maine pouted, “I don’t think so.  You with us would knock off all the flirting.”

Ruth, with fake pout of her own in place, asked, “What flirting?”

“No flirting, dear.  Maine was just trying, without success, to be funny.  We’ll just have to get Maine a neckers knob.”

Maine asked, “What’s a neckers knob?”

Homer laughed.  “It’s a knob attached to the steering wheel of a car.  Swivels so you can drive one-handed, while necking with the other arm.  An uncle of mine had one.”

Elmer grinned.  “You’re older than I thought, Homer.”

Homer laughed again.  “Yeah, so it would seem.  Actually he was a great-uncle.  He only had one arm.  Man, could he drive good with his one arm.  What’s the deal with you knowing what one is, Elmer?”

“My dad bought a car with one when I was a kid.”

Maine shook her head.  “Never ends—the things I find out working with you, Elmer.  But failing us finding one for me to use, what are we gonna to do about a driver?”

Elmer laughed, “I’ll ask for a uniform to drive us around, like we were big shots—or I’ll manage somehow, until you get better, Maine.”

Just then two uniformed officer came into the room.  One nodded in Elmer’s direction.  “Hi, Lieutenant—got orders from the brass to babysit you until this deal is over.  Got two more outside the room.  We’re gonna rotate.”

Elmer grinned.  “See, Maine, how things have a way of working out?  Meet our new drivers.  Guys, it’s Elmer here in bed.  The one-armed gal is Maine…Bobbitt—but Maine is good enough.  You two are?”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - Back To Iraq (Janitors Series, Book #2) - Education and a bit of humor.

Today’s excerpt is from Back To Iraq, Book #2 of the Janitors Series.  Drew tries to explain to Roland what they are going to do, and why.  Enjoy and have a great day.

m.j.

Drew answered, “About two o’clock in the morning, Boris and I will break into his house, place listening devices all over the place, then listen to everything he does and says.  Before you ask, that is strictly illegal.  Under ordinary circumstances, we would do no such thing in this country.  However, these are not ‘ordinary circumstances.’  Not with a missing nuke floating around.”

Roland almost choked on a piece of meat in his mouth before asking, “Nuclear weapon? Here?”

Drew smiled and answered, “Probably not here.  However, my suspicion is that lad across the street just might know where it is.  If he does, we hope to find that out from him and take it away from whoever has it.  Now, Roland, obviously this information is for your ears only.  Unless the President tells you personally that you can discuss the nuclear part of our investigation, please don’t.  The only reason I’m even telling you of this possibility is that with you staying here, you will be able to hear our conversations and listen in to the goings on across the street.  If young Al-Sharif was to suddenly say something about blowing up some place or the other, I wouldn’t want you to have a stroke.  In addition, I trust you.  Based on what, you may ask?  Years of judging people.”

“Thank you, Drew.  I’m flattered.  I think the last person that came right out and told me they trusted me was my wife…and I got her pregnant.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - Horace Goes Home (Other Books) - Horace the target.

Today’s excerpt is from Horace Goes Home, the second of three Elmer Bader books.  Horace finds out he’s going to be a ‘clay pigeon’ for the sniper waiting and watching for him to come outside.  Enjoy and have a fantastic day.

m.j.

Elmer acknowledged before ringing off.  Then Hector called Red to tell him the plan.  He requested Horace be handy when the time came.  Red agreed after talking to Hector, and went into the living room, where Julie, Nicole, Ruth, Lizzie, Jill, Horace and Doggie were all talking—with the exception of Doggie, who was camped out on Horace’s lap.  Red told them the plan, which called for Horace to walk out the front door at the prescribed time.  Horace objected, “No way.  I’m not going out there to be a clay pigeon.”

When everyone looked at him, he smiled, “Just joking.  I’ve got full confidence in those fellas out there.  With them all being Special Ops, I’ll be like a baby in the loving arms of his mother—though, I think I would like a drink.  That way I won’t feel a bullet if it goes through me.”

Jill gave him a hard look.  “You’re not funny.”

Ruth shook her head.  “Oh, yes, he is.  Come on, Red—I’ll help with the drinks.”

The second bar in the house was in a small anti-room near both the living room and dining room.  Red—who really didn’t like the way it had been arranged by his wife and daughter when they helped design the floor plan of the house—went to the bar to start pouring what he knew by now everyone drank.  When all the drinks were passed around, with Lizzie getting a glass of ginger ale, Nicole raised her glass.  “Here’s to a successful whatever you call it.”

Horace also raised his glass.  “Operation…or mission.  Take your pick.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - Whodunit Did It (Other Books) - Ruth gives Alan hell.

Today’s excerpt is from Whodunit Did It, the first of three Elmer Bader books.  Elmer’s feisty third ex-wife and current lover, working on his partner to get him in better shape.  After a hard workout the previous night, she fusses at him for not following the suggestion to take a bath before going to bed.  Enjoy and have a wonderful day.

m.j.

In the morning, Alan could hardly stand up.  He struggled into the kitchen as Ruth and Elmer exchanged glances.  Elmer looked at him.  “Did you take a nice hot bath like I told you to?”

“No…I hate baths.  I took a long shower.”

Ruth slammed down the large wooden spoon she had been mixing pancake batter with.  “Come with me.”

Ruth stomped off, with Alan walking slowly behind her.  When she reached his room, she pointed.  “Get undressed.  I’ll be right back.”

When Ruth returned to his room, Alan stood there in his underwear.  Ruth gruffly ordered, “Strip.  Two mornings ago you let it all hang out, so you ain’t got nothin’ I haven’t seen.  Strip!”

While Alan groaned as he took off his shorts, Ruth went into the bathroom for his bedroom.  There she started drawing water, along with the bubble bath liquid she had gotten.  She also poured in some Epsom salts.  She turned around as Alan, stark naked, came into the bathroom.  He looked at her pointing to the bath, “You’re worse than a damned drill sergeant.”

“What do you know about drill sergeants?”

“I served a hitch in the Marine Corps.”

“You a Marine, with your body in the shape it’s in?  Shame on you.  Get in.”

Alan sighed, but did as told.  The water was hot, but he soon got used to it.  He had to admit it felt good on his aching body.  Ruth ordered, “Soak.  I’ll be back—you damned sure better be in that tub when I get back or I’ll ring your neck—fatso.”

“Damnit, Ruth—I’m not real overweight.”

“Like hell,” Ruth grumbled, as she stomped out of the bathroom.

When she got to the kitchen, Elmer was just putting some pancake batter on the flat skillet Ruth had for pancakes.   He grinned at Ruth, who smiled back, “Damned guy is worse than a kid.  And you—how can you stand by with your thumb up your ass while you let your very own partner get in such horrible condition?  You ever get to looking like such a slob, I’ll divorce you.”

“You already did.”

“Oh, yeah.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - The Zimo Hunt (Asps Series, Book #2) - Bear has more fun.

Today’s excerpt is from The Zimo Hunt, Book #2 of the Asps Series.  Bear takes out another bomb-maker.  Also, the terrorist safe house to be watched trying to find Zimo.  Enjoy and have a great day.

m.j.

About the time Jim spoke, Bear had Kye stop, right outside the new bomb factory…with instructions to keep the car running.  He got out, leaving the door open, took one step, pushed the countdown button on the bomblet, and threw it through a window.  He jumped back into the car and didn’t have to tell Kye anything, as she darted into traffic and drove as fast as she could.  She was actually surprised how far a car could go in five seconds.

Inside the house, the bomb-maker and his crew were stunned for a second when the bomblet came crashing through the window.  None of them reacted quickly enough to get the ticking bomb and toss it back out the window.  One of them was reaching for it when it exploded, igniting the other explosives in the house.

Kye drove on, even as debris from the bomb factory rained down on their car, as well as everything nearby.  One chunk of the building landed on the trunk of the car, but slid right off, leaving a nasty gash in the awful paint job of the car.

As she drove, Kye kidded, “Nice work, Bear.  Though I must admit you scared the crap out of me.  Whatever hit the rear of the car sure made a thud when it hit,” then she laughed and added, “not that Harry’s car will ever know the difference.”

Bear laughed and ordered, “Home, James.”

·

Back at the safe house, Bear and Kye reported their exploits since last seen, with Kye telling Harry his car had been damaged, but still ran as poorly as it had previously.  Harry took the ribbing about the car with good humor, looked at Drew and Boris, and asked, “Now what?”

Boris answered, “Now we watch the safe house Drew and I just visited, front and back, around the clock, and follow whoever shows up there.  It probably won’t be Zimo—or should I say, Marwan Hanania.  But it almost certainly will be one of his people, sent by him to bring those two in for consultation.  When said individual sees the two dead bodies, my guess will be he will hurry back to his leader to tell him what has happened.”

Drew, who had been at their computer printing copies of the pictures they had of Hanania, nodded his head and started passing out the pictures to everyone in the room.  “Just in case he shows up himself, take him…alive if possible, but don’t miss him.  We may only get one chance.”

Jim looked at Holly.  “Shall we take first watch?”

Holly nodded as Harry stood up.  “I’ll take the first watch, also.  You game, Jack?”

“Sure.  Jim, you want the front or the back?”

Holly answered, “We’ll take the back.”

Jim shrugged and nodded, then headed for the door, with Holly at his side.  As he walked, he tossed the keys to his rental to Drew.  “We’ll take one of Harry’s wrecks…be less conspicuous that way.”

Harry joked, “I’m glad someone has the sense to know why I got older cars.”

Drew exclaimed, “Older!  Are you nuts?  Those cars are older than old.  And they’re pieces of crap on top of it.”

Latest from the Janitors, Asps, Other Books, and More Books - Birth Of The Asps (Asps Series, Book #1) - Dusty arrives just in time.

Today’s excerpt is from Birth Of The Asps, Book #1 of the Asps Series.  Dusty saves Kye from certain death, then rigs the scene to look like an accident.  That done, he later calls in to report what they found out about al-Qaida’s plans for the island of Dominica. Enjoy and have a fantastic day.

m.j.

NOTE:  Caught some grief for where I ended the last excerpt from this book, so here’s a continuation.

As it turned out, Kye’s resignation to her pending death was premature.  Because even as the machete started its downward arch, Dusty, who had snuck up behind the much-shorter Arab, was able to reach over his bent forward form and grab his head in both hands.  Dusty snapped the man’s neck, killing him instantly…the machete falling harmlessly to the ground.

Dusty looked down at Kye.  “Sorry to cut that so close, but I didn’t want to shoot him.  Want to make his death look like an accident.”

Kye swallowed with dry mouth.  “No problem.  Thanks for savin’ my bacon.”

“You’re welcome.  Let’s go.”

With that, Dusty handed Kye the now-empty bags and picked up the dead terrorist.  As he turned, he pointed to the ground with his free hand.  “Grab his machete, please.”

Kye said nothing, but did as asked, and followed Dusty, noting the ease with which he carried the dead man.  Sorta like a small sack of potatoes,” she thought.

When they reached the incline they’d come up, Dusty tossed the man down it.  Then he turned, took the machete from Kye, and about halfway down the incline dropped it alongside the trail.

At the bottom of the incline, they both turned and looked at the scene of the “accident.”  Dusty nodded approval of his handy work, then retrieved their clothing, picnic basket, and blanket, from where they had hidden them.

Without a word, Dusty started changing his clothes.  Kye did the same but whispered, “Feel sorta funny changing clothes in front of that guy.”

Dusty laughed.  “He can’t see you, but I can…and I like what I see.”

“Oh, hush.”

After they changed, Dusty led them back to the car, carrying everything, because Kye was having trouble carrying herself.  When they reached the car, she sighed and slowly got in.  Then Dusty stored their things, except for the picnic basket.  He opened that and offered Kye a sandwich.  She waived it off and asked, “We got anything to drink in there?”

“Just water and soda.”

Kye only groaned as Dusty got in and drove, while he ate his sandwich.  Kye glanced over at him eating and driving, but said nothing.  But when he reached in the basket and started munching on some of the fruit, she shook her head.  “Dammit, Dusty, pay attention to your driving.”

“Hey, I didn’t fall down a little old hill.”

Kye just gave him a dirty look, sure that was just the first of the digs she’d get about falling down the incline.

Dusty stopped at a nice scenic spot, got out his cell phone, and placed a call to Bruce.  He found that phone busy, so called Harry.

Harry saw who was calling and answered, “Hi, Dusty.  What’s up?”

“Found ‘em.”

“Great, Dusty.  You get any read on what they might be up to?”

“Yeah, and you’re not gonna believe it.  These idiots are planning a coup.  They got some local out-of-pocket politician and they’re gonna put him in as Prime Minister and President.”

“Oh, that’s crazy.”

“Crazy or not, that’s their plan.  I got it on tape.  Let me play it for you.”
