Today’s excerpt is from Back

Later, after
Evan got the word the casino and hotel had been cleared, Drew looked at Suzan,
who had still not said a word about the cigar, and asked, “After your slow burn
at your husband’s extra cigar—beyond his three-a-day limit—would you be kind
enough to fly us home? I’m worn out.”
Pepper cut
in. “Hey, not so fast. While in Las Vegas, I want a grand meal…and
plan on doing some gambling.”
Drew
sighed. “Shall we retire to FBI
headquarters, dispose of little Sammy, and make sure we are no longer
needed? Then, I suppose we can take care
of your needs…if our pilot has no
objections.”
Suzan
laughed. “Don’t put this on me, Mr.
Hollins. We can stay the week, for all I
care…longer if we have to bury my
darling beloved because of his cigar smoking.”
Boris, Drew,
Pepper—even Andrew James—had all wondered how long it would take Suzan to bring
up the subject of the cigar. Now that
she had, Drew went to Sammy Lee, grabbed him, got him to his feet, and looked
at Evan. “He’s all yours. Lead the way to your temporary office.”
At FBI
headquarters, Las Vegas, Evan talked to the Las Vegas Agent-in-Charge. He turned Sammy Lee over to another agent,
gave instructions what was to be done with him, and went to Drew and his group. They were talking to the four SIS agents when
he walked up. Drew looked at him and
groaned, “We have just decided to eat in the casino portion of the hotel we
checked into, but haven’t yet seen. Our
MI6 friends have agreed to join up. It
would be my honor to feed you as well.”
“Sure. I just gave the local guys the info I had on
the rest of Lee’s gang. They don’t need
me to help round them all up. I’m done
here—subject to clearing it with my new Director.”
Suzan glanced
around the group, then directly at Pepper.
“Okay, gamblin’ lady—I’m game to join you, as Drew and Boris no doubt
are. But there is the little matter of
Andrew James. He’s too young to be
allowed in the gambling area.”
Pepper shrugged
as Drew looked at Evan. “I know a famous
FBI agent who has children, and is therefore well qualified to look after
Andrew James.”
Evan just shook
his head. But before he could respond,
one of the SIS agents spoke up. “Sir
Anthony has forbidden the four of us to gamble, quote, ‘the first shekel while
in Las Vegas,’ unquote. We would be
happy to entertain young Mr. Telman while you lot help pay for the building of
the casino.”
Evan
grinned. “Thank you.”
