The
call came sooner than Jim had anticipated.
Eighteen hours after Jim had taken off his first boot, the phone
rang. Jim was sound asleep, but
instantly awoke and answered on the first ring.
He said, “Hello,” in a surprisingly clear voice.
“Hi,
Jim. Bradley here.”
Army
Major General Ellis G. Bradley was the Military/Intelligence advisor to the
President and the Janitors’ direct link to the President.
“Damn,
General, you cost me ten bucks.”
“How’s
that?”
“I bet
Hector you’d have Ted call.”
“Tough
luck, pal. You can afford it. I think that underground facility you’ve been
monitoring in Iraq needs some further attention. The boss agrees…even if we can’t publicize
it. He wants to send a message, and soon.
Needless to say he’s pissed, as we all are. We’re already sure it was asshole bin Laden
and his al-Qaida scum. It’d be wonderful
if that facility in Iraq was theirs. I
presume you’re ready to go.”
“Yes,
sir. We’ll probably need some sort of
escort. So will Hector and Tom from Los
Angeles.”
“Already
arranged. Your plane and theirs make it
without fueling stops?”
“No. Probably need a stop. Maybe Scott or thereabouts.”
General
Bradley did some fast mental calculations and decided Scott Air Force Base in
Illinois would work well with the change in escorts he’d planned. “Okay, I’ll arrange it for Scott. I’ve got a number for you to call when you’re
ready to roll. Pass it on to the boys in
LA…separate escorts for both of you.
What about Drew Hollins and the Russian?”
“They’re
driving. Probably at the Joint by now,
or soon will be.”
“Good. Talk to you when you arrive,” General Bradley
replied before giving Jim the phone number to use for his military escort.
General
Bradley always referred to Boris as “the Russian” because he was not all that
comfortable having an ex-KGB agent working so close to White House
matters. This in spite of both he and
the President having agreed to the inclusion of Boris in the Janitors.
